Police have released CCTV footage of the moment a man was arrested for a string of early-hours sexual assaults and paid tribute to the “remarkable bravery and resilience” of his victims after he was found guilty by a jury.

The footage was filmed in the early hours of a Sunday morning, after Abdelkarim Arfaoui had attacked the five women within the same 90 minutes.

Today, the 27-year-old was found unanimously guilty of one count of attempted rape, five of sexual touching without consent, two of assault, one of grave and criminal assault, and one of threatening and abusive behaviour.

During an eight-day Royal Court trial, jurors heard five women testify about the attacks, detailing what happened and how they felt afterwards. They deliberated for four hours before unanimously convicting him.

One woman, who Arfaoui had groped, said she felt “disgusted, dirty, lost” and a loved one reported that she became “enclosed” and found it difficult to sleep. Another struggled to go outside alone for some time after the incident.

Arfaoui claimed during the trial that he had given the women no “sex attention” and that he was simply lost because he was new to Jersey.

He said he had been awake for 24 hours after a day at work and a night out, and that his phone had no internet connection.

Arfaoui maintained throughout the trial that he had only approached the women to ask for directions.

Crown Advocate Lauren Hallam told jurors that his claims were “an affront to common sense and quite frankly, an insult to [their] intelligence”.

Jurors were shown a succession of CCTV clips taken from the hour and a half when the crimes took place.

Arfaoui was shown walking past locations in town, pinning one woman against a fence and kissing her, and following another.

In one clip, he could also be seen groping one of the women.

When he was arrested, he told police officers: “I wasn’t trying anything, just going to work.”

Arfaoui was placed on the sex offenders’ register and remanded in custody.

He is next due to appear in court on Friday to schedule a date for sentencing in front of the Royal Court’s superior number – which only convenes for the most serious of cases.
