There’s been a lot of French people in town lately.
It seems like every time I step out of the office my senses are aroused by the Gallic nature of our visitors.
That left me hankering for some French food and so I headed towards the French Halles in the market.
Mylk is the kiosk that wraps around the corner of the Market Buildings. I’ve seen galettes advertised here and I am particularly partial to one of those so off I trotted to find out more.
The menu was a bit sparse…just five choices essentially.

The menu also offered other tasty treats like crepes, waffles, and brioche buns, but I had my tastebuds set on a galette.
The savoury alternative to the sweetness of a crepe is a personal favourite of mine. I’ve devoured them at other locations in St Peter Port, St Malo and further afield.
I was excited to order and pleased to be met by a very friendly chap who seemed to personify the best of the hospitality industry with a smile on his face, a warm hello, and a welcoming vibe.
I enquired whether I might order a galette – with mushrooms? Unfortunately, the fun guy had to say no to any funghi. I settled for a cheese and tomato filled galette and asked how long it would take. With five minutes to spare I popped across to New Look for a quick browse. I had barely sat down on the benches outside Mylk before my friendly server called out another hello and proffered up a warm takeaway lunchbox. It smelt as good as it felt.
On arriving back at my office, I was focused on just my lunch.

The warm lunchbox contained a large, folded, stuffed full galette. With large chunks of tomato held in place by the melted cheese, it looked delicious. And it was.
There was nothing to complain about with the taste or appearance of this galette.
It looked and tasted delicious. It was warm, and filling. I managed to work through the afternoon without a single hunger pang and even delayed my evening meal as a result.
VERDICT
It’s a shame the choice of fillings is limited to a mere cheese or cheese and tomato for vegetarians. But the cheese and tomato galette was a winner. Warm, delicious and filling!
