Awkward interview questions…. are you interviewing anywhere else?

Following on from our previous article about dreaded interview questions and how to answer, we thought we would look at another question job seekers struggle with… ‘Are you being interviewed anywhere else?’

Lots of people feel unsure of how to answer this, but it really isn’t a trick question!

There are various reasons that an interviewer would ask this question, they will want to see how your job search is going overall, so it’s a good question to be ready for! Firstly, it helps with timings – if you are already quite far through the process with another company then they will know that they have to progress quickly if they are interested in you. They may also be interested to know what other areas you are applying for, to ascertain how committed you are to their role or industry.  Or it might just be to see who they are in competition with!

We would say try and be honest, but not to be too specific, as you may sound more interested in that role than the one you are interviewing for.  Briefly mention that are you are in the process with other companies and say what stage you are at – early stages, or second interview, for example.  If you are questioned further you can mention what it is about the company that interested you.

This can also be an opportunity to turn the interview question back on them, especially if you do have other positive on-going applications and are a highly desirable candidate. For example, what can their company offer you that their competitors can’t? How quickly are they looking to get someone on-board?

Just remember, as much as job seekers will be interviewing for more than one firm, a firm will be interviewing more than one candidate for their role and they want to make sure that a candidate is truly committed to a career with their company.

As with all awkward questions, approach it with confidence and professionalism and above all keep calm, and be prepared.
