My Oma lives in Alderney and she’s been a massive part of my life since I was just 6 weeks old. From such an early age, she’s always been there, a constant source of love, comfort, and warmth. I’ve gone to Alderney with my dad and mum and sister over the years, and those trips became such a big part of my childhood.
Alderney always felt like a magical place to me growing up, and so much of that was because of her. The memories we made there, the time spent together, and the feeling of being completely at home are things I’ve carried with me ever since. Now I have my own children, it means even more to be able to share that same magic with them.

My dad died 7 years ago, and since then it’s become even more important that we are able to still see my Oma, Anna Shorey. Being with her helps keep that connection to him alive. Going back to Alderney, or her coming here, helps me still feel like there is a little part of my dad still around. It’s something that can’t really be replaced.
She is a lovely lady and has been through so much in life, especially losing her son, and yet she remains such a kind, caring, and positive person. She has always put others first, and continues to be someone we all look up to.
It would be amazing if we could just hop between islands to see each other more easily. Being able to visit more often would mean so much to all of us, especially as time together has become even more precious.

It would definitely help her feel less lonely as she’s recently lost her best friend, who was also like a step-grandad to us, as he had to move into an English care home. That loss has been really difficult, and it’s made staying connected as a family even more important.
We love her so much, and being able to spend more time together would mean everything – not just for us, but for her too. It’s about keeping those family bonds strong, holding onto memories, and continuing to create new ones for the next generation.
Love is in the air.
