An “up-and-coming” table tennis player has started his season “in style”, winning a local singles tournament.
Morgan Finn (12) won the St Pauls Open Handicap Singles title by overcoming an Island Men’s player, and previous St Pauls winner, Lawrence Stacey.
The traditional season opener had a full entry of 48 players from across Guernsey’s table tennis leagues, from juniors through seniors.
Morgan began his title charge strongly, beating Ken Falla and Craig Dunning in well-fought matches and showed a good performance against Division 1 Sam Clark, making the most of his +16 start.
Lawrence emerged from his group with ease before taking on large handicap deficits against Ruth Vaudiin and Maija Hansen. He kept his cool coming from behind in a game against the junior Luke Evans.
In the semi-finals, Lawrence dug deep to beat Connor Osbourne, while Morgan’s 12-point advantage defeated Summer League champion Sekao Nwako.
In the final, Morgan’s clinical play and an 18-point advantage saw him topple Lawrence.
