Bain made the most of a deep field at the Podium Festival in Leicester, where a series of graded 5k races took place around the New College cycle track, one of the flattest circuits in the UK.

Running in the Elite B race, Bain clocked 14:47, knocking four seconds off the previous leading time set by Luke Williams in 2020.

I was in a stacked race so took it out rather cautiously and then proceeded to make my way through the field as the race went on,” said Bain, usually more noted for his 800 and 1500m running on the track.

“I finished really strongly, actually out-kicking Jamie Webb, and having overtaken Oliver Dustin around 3k in, I was quite happy to have won the ‘battle of the 800m guys’.”

Bain is currently at university in Edinburgh.

“I’ve been training more closely with Scottish Athletics since the summer which has been a significant shift in focus towards more endurance-based work,” he said.

“I’ve been really enjoying it and I’m looking forward to what will hopefully be a really positive 2024.

“I’ve got my eyes set on the Easter Festival after which I’ll be dropping back down in distance towards my preferred events, 800m and 1500m, in the summer. I’m excited to see how the improved strength will translate into middle distance.”

Bain’s 800m best of 1:52.19 puts him fourth on the Guernsey all-time list, and he has run 3:55.42 over 1500m for sixth on the local rankings.

Guernsey Athletics’ Easter Festival takes place from Friday 29 March when the opening race is a 5K on the West Coast.
