LGBTQ+ charity Liberate is launching an inclusive 6-a-side football team in Guernsey.
The new team is part of Liberate’s wider sporting and outdoors events programme named ‘OUT Active’.
To gauge interest in the new team, an initial kickabout is taking place at La Mare Playing Fields on Thursday 14 August between 19:00 and 20:30 for people aged 18 and over.
“It’s an LGBTQ+ football club, but we welcome allies and anyone who feels like they would be most comfortable playing football in a fully inclusive environment,” said volunteer Jack Ingrouille, who pitched the idea.
Having grown up playing the sport, Jack said the idea came when they wanted to start playing football again, yet felt anxious to return to playing within traditionally single-gendered, hyper masculine environments.
“I want this club to be a place where people of all genders, all abilities, and all identities can come and play a sport they love in an environment that wholeheartedly embraces them.”
Liberate said anyone who may enjoy a safe space are welcome to attend tomorrow night’s try-out and future events.
This may include but is not limited to anybody who is queer, neurodivergent, lives with mental health conditions, is disabled, or otherwise, said the charity.
Sessions will take place weekly after Thursday 14 August, with eventual optional plans to join the league, Jack added.
“The aim is to get a team together to join the 6-a-side leisure leagues at the KGV, but you can absolutely just come along for our weekly social kick about sessions – there is no obligation to play in the league.”
OUT Active events are sponsored by the Co-Op and JT, and with funding from the Saffery Rotary Walk 2025.
