Steve Wood has claimed his latest medal in martial arts, taking gold in his category at the All Stars BJJ Europeans 2025 in London.

After a successful career in bodybuilding and powerlifting, which included breaking the Channel Island Bench Press record, injuries had forced Mr Wood to retire, which he says  led to a period of mental health struggles.

However, with the support of his family and the Guernsey community, he says he discovered a new passion in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

In just four years, whilst training at Sarnia Ju-jitsu under Adrian Harbour, Mr Wood has since progressed to purple belt and won 10 gold medals in major UK competitions, (out of 19 total medals), whilst representing Guernsey.

Following his latest title, he emphasised the positive impact of BJJ on his confidence, health, and sense of community.

“Brazilian jiu-jitsu—and Martial Arts in general—gave me back my confidence, my health, and a new sense of community.

“Sometimes the hardest part is just walking through the door. But that one choice—to try something new—gave me more than I ever expected. Not just the training, but the confidence, the purpose, and most importantly, the people.”
