A 32-year-old man has been arrested after a “suspicious package” prompted the evacuation of several businesses in St Helier this afternoon.

Emergency services responded to reports of a suspicious package in Natwest at Library Place.

In a statement issued at 17:55, police said the “precautionary measure was deployed in the interest of public safety due to a male acting suspicious before and after leaving a bag”.

The force confirmed that a 32-year-old male has been arrested – also “as a precautionary measure” – under the Criminal Hoaxes (2000) Law.

The area of Library Place was cordoned off this afternoon while investigations were carried out.

Express understands that staff members working at companies in the area of Library Place and Broad Street – including Iceland and Lloyds Bank – were told to evacuate immediately.

The situation was resolved and the area was re-opened at around 17:15.
