Jersey Cricket Club claimed has claimed its first series victory after completing a 2-0 clean sweep of the Guernsey Mavericks at KGV.

The representative side, captained by Robbie Forrest, followed up a seven-wicket win in the opening match with a four-wicket success in game two, continuing an encouraging debut season for the initiative.

The result builds on last month’s drawn series against the MCC and provides another boost for a programme aimed at creating more opportunities for players performing in Jersey’s domestic leagues.

Jersey Cricket Head of Operations Lee Meloy said the project had been developed in response to feedback from across the island’s cricket community.

“The Jersey Cricket Club idea has been formed over the last 12 to 18 months with feedback from a variety of people throughout the local leagues regarding trying to find further opportunities for players who want them,” he said.

“The benefit of these fixtures is to give the depth of players more opportunity. We want to give people who turn out week in, week out for their club and put good performances in some recognition and the chance to play at a higher level.”

Theo Pullman was the standout performer with the ball. The Old Victorians seamer produced figures of 4-11 from four overs as Guernsey were bowled out for 75 in 16 overs.

Ed Robinson top-scored with 32, while every Jersey bowler used picked up at least one wicket.

The chase was briefly disrupted when Charlie Forshaw removed both Jersey openers, but Drew Sylvester’s unbeaten 37 and Forrest’s 24 not out guided the visitors to victory with more than five overs to spare.

Pullman shines again as Jersey complete sweep

Guernsey put up a stronger fight in the second match, posting 118-6 from their 20 overs thanks to contributions from Robinson (22), Kevin Van Der Geest (26) and Forshaw (20 not out).

However, Pullman continued his impressive form, claiming 3-24 to finish the day with remarkable combined figures of 7-35 from eight overs.

Jersey’s reply got off to a disastrous start as Forshaw ripped through the top order, reducing the visitors to 14-4.

Forrest once again steadied the innings alongside Jacques Van Der Walt, with the pair adding 85 runs to swing the match back in Jersey’s favour.

Van Der Walt proved the difference-maker, scoring the only half-century of the series with 57 from 66 balls, including seven boundaries.

After his dismissal with just nine runs still required, Tiaan Kruger and Scott Van Breda completed the chase and sealed the series.

‘Extremely successful’ first season

Reflecting on the campaign so far, Mr Meloy said the representative programme had exceeded expectations.

“We’re really delighted with how the representative stuff has gone so far this year,” he said.

“The standard was good. We’re happy with that and it was great to get those fixtures over the line.

“The quality on show throughout the day was superb. We were hosted wonderfully by Guernsey Cricket. The facilities at KGV were fantastic as they always are, and it was a good day’s action between two decent sides.”

Jersey Cricket is now looking at ways to expand the programme, including the possibility of introducing both T20 and 50-over fixtures against the Mavericks in future seasons.

“This is just year one, with the hope of it growing in year two and beyond,” Mr Meloy added.

“We want these players to bring those standards back into the domestic club game and continue to drive the levels of the leagues higher.
