Meet the squad: Why Isle of Man think they have the edge

The Cherry Godfrey Cup will see Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Wight and Isle of Man face off against each other to see who will be crowned the top footballing island.

Due to be held every two years, the first instalment of the new tournament is set to take place tomorrow and Saturday.

The first match – between Isle of Man and Isle of Wight – will be tomorrow at 17:00, before Jersey takes on its Muratti rivals Guernsey at 20:00.

The Isle of Man and Isle of Wight will be familiar with each other after playing the same group in the Island Games last year.

The Isle of Man won their clash 5-0 and went on to secure the bronze medal.

Ahead of the game, they shared a little more about the strengths of each player in their squad…

Becky Corkish, Captain (26)

Of Becky, who can play anywhere, the team said: “Corky, our Captain is a versatile player with immense drive and leadership.”

Kayleigh Greggor, (31)

Of this goalkeeper, who has 20 friendly caps, they said: “Kayls is the Isle of Man’s No.1 with vast experience and quality.”

Caitlin Beaty (16)

Newbie Caitlin was described as “a young fearless keeper with massive potential”.

Stevie Mallon (21)

Stevie, who plays in defence, was said to be a “tough tackling, very consistent defender”, who is “always performing at a good level”.

Eve McGeown (17)

Eve is a “young but very driven defender making her competitive debut on these matches”.

Anna Shaw (27)

Anna, who can play in defence and midfield, is “a footballer with great passion and drive”, who “never gives up with quality on the ball”.

Emily Rawlins (17)

“Emily is a young but strong and very talented footballer with limitless potential”, the squad said of this defence/midfield player.

Holly Stephen (23)

Holly, who plays in the midfield, “has grown into a great footballer”, according to her team. “She works hard and has a 40-yard ‘top bins’ goal in her arsenal.”

Lisa Costain (27)

Lisa, a midfielder, was described as “a very experienced player with great vision and skills to match”.

Chloe Teare (23)

Chloe is a “dedicated” midfielder with “vision and skill to break through any defence”.

Louise Gibbons (32)

This midfielder has “a fantastic fitness level with quality to match”.

Kiera Morgan (28)

Midfielder Keira was said to be “a highly skilled player, who is agile on the ball, with great speed”.

Becci Cole (37)

Becci, a midfield/forward, “is a very experienced footballer, with great skill and speed”.

Erin Sells (18)

Forward Erin “has fantastic technical ability and knows how to find the back of the net in style”.

Millie Dawson (16)

Forward Millie “is a young striker who has made a big impact at club level”. The club added that she will be “making her competitive debut at this tournament”.
