At any sporting stadium, there will be a list of banned items – usually comprising flares, weapons and alcohol.

But, ahead of the 108th edition of the famous sporting rivalry at Springfield today, one thing on the prohibited list has raised confusion and a few laughs.

Because, while most of the list is fairly standard, Jersey has issued a carrot ban ahead of the match against Guernsey.

Jerseyman Dan Hare shared a screenshot of the restrictions online, quickly drawing attention from islanders ahead of the big game.

The long-standing rivalry between Jersey and Guernsey dates all the way back to 1905 and, over the years, has produced plenty of traditions, nicknames and light-hearted digs between the two islands.

The unusual ban stems from the nickname Jersey has for their Sarnian neighbours – donkeys.

The veg has become a tongue-in-cheek part of Muratti folklore over the years, with carrots often spotted in the crowd – although occasionally have been thrown onto the pitch towards Guernsey players prompting the ban.

Mr Hare’s post even caught the attention of Guernsey football legend Matt Le Tissier, who replied with a string of embarrassed emojis after being alerted to the situation.

Kick-off for the big game is 12.30pm.
