Stanley Gibbons is to bring a selection of rare stamps and coins worth over £1 million to Guernsey this week for a Luxury Asset Event.

The exhibits include an error stamp, which the only other known example is owned by the Queen (a customer of Stanley Gibbons), originally priced at 13p, now catalogued at £135,000; a rare penny Black (the world’s first stamp); and a block of 2d (two penny) Blues priced at almost £1 million.

In addition, Stanley Gibbons will be exhibiting a selection of rare gold coins all brimming with history. These include the largest gold coin ever struck in England, the Charles I 'Triple Unite’; a coin from Cromwell's 'Commonwealth,' and an Alexander the Great coin from 330BC.

Keith Heddle, Managing Director, Stanley Gibbons Investment, said: “We will be bringing over some of the rarest stamps and coins in the world. Most people will have heard of the Penny Black, the world’s first stamp, and may have even seen an example before; but we will be bringing over one of the finest examples of its kind to help show people what makes a particular stamp like this so rare, and so valuable.

“Heritage and long-term value are increasingly a big attraction of stamps; some sophisticated investors consider them not just beautiful objects to collect, but potentially assets that could be an attractive investment in every sense of the word. The error stamp began life in 1976 at 13p but due to a freak printing error and its rarity, it is now priced at £135,000.”

Founded in 1856, Stanley Gibbons is the the world’s leading rare stamp and prestige collectibles merchant, holding the Royal Warrant for services to philately since 1914.

Keith said: “Tangible, heritage assets, that enable you to own a piece of history, to hold and enjoy, are starting to pique the interest of investors from all over the world. Uncorrelated to mainstream markets, they can provide portfolio diversification as well as pride of ownership.”

As well the coins and British stamps, Stanley Gibbons will be bringing over a Chinese rarity that almost had its designer executed.  Keith will be on hand to tell guests the full story of these fascinating collectibles at the Luxury Asset Evening Thursday 23 February.
