Firefighters cut casualty from upturned car

Firefighters had to cut a trapped occupant out of an overturned car on Friday night.

The Jersey Fire and Rescue Service had a busy evening dealing with crashes, after Friday’s rain caused slippery road surfaces.

Just after returning to headquarters after dealing with a car that had hit a lamppost on Victoria Avenue, they got a callout to St Peter’s Valley just before 10 pm.

The call said that a person was trapped inside an upturned Citroen, and when firefighters were dispatched, they had to use hydraulic rescue equipment to get to the casualty.

The person who had been trapped was taken to hospital for treatment.

Watch Commander Richard Ryan said: “To reduce chances of hydroplaning which can happen if water prevents the tyres from gripping the surface, drivers should slow down, avoid hard braking or turning sharply.

“Also, it’s important for motorists to allow ample stopping distance between cars by increasing the following distance of the vehicle in front of them.”
