The GSPCA is delighted to recognise the fantastic support from staff at Howdens Guernsey, based at Route de la Garenne, Pitronnerie Road, who have generously volunteered their time throughout April and May to help improve the charity’s animal shelter in St Andrews.
Members of the Howdens team attended in small groups of two and three, giving up their time to assist with the installation of a brand-new pathway around the Shelter. Their hard work has made a significant difference, helping to improve access across the site for staff, volunteers, and the animals in our care.
The new pathway project has been made possible thanks to a kind grant from the Co-op, which not only supported the materials for the pathway but also funded the installation of solar lighting. These lights now provide safer access for GSPCA staff when walking dogs and attending to aviaries and animal enclosures—particularly during dark evenings and wet weather, when surfaces can become slippery.
Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the team at Howdens for giving up their time to come and help us in such a practical and meaningful way. The difference the new pathway has made is huge, especially in ensuring safety for both our team and the animals, particularly during poor weather. We would also like to thank the Co-op for their generous grant, which has enabled not only the pathway but also the addition of solar lighting, further improving safety across the site. This is a wonderful example of businesses and our community coming together to support animal welfare.
“They were also assisted by a number of others in fitting the pated including some of our Work 2 Benefit placements.”
The GSPCA relies heavily on the support of local businesses and volunteers, and projects like this demonstrate the real impact that community involvement can have.
