A charity trek scheduled to take place across Sri Lanka from 25 November to 3 December 2027 has bagged the Channel Islands Co-op as its first ever principal partner.
The supermarket has committed a £10,000 investment to support the Jersey Cheshire Home trek, which will see participants taking on an eight day hike through Sri Lanka’s variously picturesque and demanding landscapes.
It marks the tenth international challenge undertaken by the charity as part of its “Trekking For Those Who Can’t” campaign.
Money provided by the CI co-op will go towards equipping and furnishing three new specialist resident rooms at the St Helier facility.
The partnership has also led to the charity securing an additional 30 places for the trek – increasing the number of walkers to 60 and making it the largest undertaking in the charity’s history.
“This is one of the most meaningful commitments we’ve made”
David Mcgrath, chief marketing officer for the Channel Islands, will be one of the many Islanders flying to Sri Lanka for the truly mammoth fundraising mission.
“Supporting the communities we serve is at the heart of everything we do in the Coop,” he said. “And this is one of the most meaningful commitments we’ve made.
“Some of our former colleagues are among the Islanders that Jersey Cheshire Homes cares for, which makes this partnership particularly personal for us.
“With 60 trekkers joining the adventure, this will be the biggest trek the charity has ever undertaken, and we’re delighted that our team will be part of it.”
Jersey Cheshire Home chief executive Donna Abel said she was “absolutely delighted to be partnering with the Channel Islands Coop on our trekking challenge”.
She added: “Their generosity, commitment and believe in our mission will make a real and lasting difference to Islanders with disabilities.
“We’re incredibly grateful for their support and proud to be embarking on this journey together.”
