Local advocate wins Editor’s Choice at Powerwomen Awards

Monday 04 March 2019

Corbett Le Quesne’s Senior Partner, Advocate Barbara Corbett, has been awarded the Editor’s Choice Award at the Citywealth Powerwomen Awards.

The Awards aim to recognise individuals and companies who maximise the potential of women in wealth, thereby creating "a platform for good practice to collectively exercise positive social influence in the sector."

Corbett Le Quesne originally put Advocate Corbett's name forward for the Inspirational Woman of the Year Award, but she was instead surprised to receive "the even greater recognition" of the Editor’s Choice Award.

“To be recognised as someone who supports women in work is a huge accolade,” Advocate Corbett. “My own career route was unconventional but has given me a good understanding both of what it means to be a working woman in the legal profession, and in my early professional life, the challenges of being a working mother as well, building a career at the same time as looking after and caring for a family.

"It is hugely important for women to have other female role models to show them that their dreams can be more than just dreams, and that they can have both a family and a successful career whilst forging ahead in what can be very male dominated environments.”

Advocate Corbett was not the only local woman to be recognised in the award. Estera's Chief Executive Officer, Farah Ballands, picked up Gold in the Woman of the Year Business Growth category.

She said: “Since Estera became independent we have invested significantly in the growth of our long-established private wealth and corporate services businesses and have also built a fully-fledged global funds capability, which now represents roughly a third of our business and boasts a stable of top tier private equity funds across a number of offices, including Guernsey and Luxembourg.

"Our staff of highly regarded practitioners has worked hard to grow the business rapidly over the last three years. This growth has come without sacrificing our commitment to excellence in client service or our collaborative employee culture. We now have a well-diversified business with a global footprint. This award recognises our global team and their efforts, I am extremely proud to work with them all.”

Fiona Le Poidevin, CEO of The International Stock Exchange Group (TISEG), scooped up the Bronze Award in the same category.

She said: “I am delighted to have won this award. The International Stock Exchange (TISE) has experienced fantastic growth over the last few years and it is very pleasing to have that recognised in this way. It is testimony to the hard work of all my colleagues across the TISE group and the significant milestones we are achieving together as a team.”

Mrs Le Poidevin added: “Huge congratulations to Farah and Sheila for their success too in what was a very competitive category featuring leaders of some very successful businesses.”
