Online advice clinic for employing children

Wednesday 09 November 2016

Local employers can get some free advice today to ensure they do not fall foul of the Discrimination Law when dealing with children.

Law At Work is holding an online clinic at midday all about employing children.

Anyone can pose a question during the one hour clinic using the hashtag #asklaw, either on Facebook here or by emailing here in advance and the answer will be posted during the session.

Law at Work says that the Discrimination Law is where employers may come unstuck when they are reviewing applications from children. They say that employers need to ensure that child applicants must be given the same opportunities as other applicants for a role.

Kelly Flageul, LAW’s Managing Director, said: “Children are being encouraged younger than ever to go out into the work place and get work experience. Hiring children should follow the same process as hiring an adult; otherwise you are in danger of committing age discrimination.

“For some roles, it is fair that a child will not have the right qualifications or experience. However, the process of recruitment should be based on their merits and not simply their age.”
