Alleged "erratic" driving sparks arrest

Thursday 23 July 2020

A 30-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of getting behind the wheel after drinking too much following reports of "erratic" driving as he passed the Police station.

According to Police, the alleged drink driving offence involved a silver Mercedes travelling between the Tunnel in St. Helier and Le Clos Gosset in St. Saviour between 19:45 and 20:00 on Tuesday (21 July).

Describing the reported sequence of events in a statement, officers said: "The driver of a silver Mercedes was driving in an erratic manner through the tunnel going straight past the Police Station and towards Georgetown.

"The car then turned left into Bagot Road, before turning right and going into Le Clos Gosset. It was driving behind a moped and a white van. Whilst at the traffic light junction of Cleveland Road the driver was spoken to by a person in a blue Volkswagen Polo."

The 30-year-old driver of the Mercedes was later arrested on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle while over the prescribed limit, but has since been released on Police bail while officers continue their investigations.

They would now like to speak to anyone who saw the Mercedes travelling along the road and would be able to identify or describe the driver.

Officers also say they want to speak to the rider of the moped or the Volkswagen driver, as well as anyone that may have CCTV or dash-cam footage.

Anyone with information should call 612612 or make an anonymous report using Crimestoppers' online form.
