Students' eco t-shirt designs go on display

Wednesday 14 June 2023

A catwalk event showcasing sustainable t-shirts designed by local students is being held tonight.

Highlands students' designs – all of which are focused on the theme of looking after the planet – will be going on display at Coopers Coffee in IFC5 at 17:30 this evening and will from then on be on sale in the café and online.

The t-shirts are made by a UK-based print company called Teemill, which makes new clothing from old items returned by customers.

Chantal Venton, a lecturer in Highlands College's Arts Department, said that this generation of students was already keen to adopt sustainable habits.

She said: "This generation I think are quite aware of it, and the creative kids particularly, they're scouring the charity shops already because they're wanting things that are not off-the-rail.

"They want the peculiar, vintage, off the wall fashion, to communicate their identities in their way.

"We are very proactive during their project work, that we're embedding sustainable, political and social issues."

The project is part of a push to include more client-based projects to give students practical work experience.

It also aligns with Highlands' sustainability strategy, which has seen courses in all areas incorporate the theme of sustainability into their curriculum.

For example, the Culinary Arts course works with local growers, art students hold recycling and repurposing events, and hair and beauty students take a sustainable salon module and have held a "helmet hair" caravan for bike commuters.

All Sixth Form students at Highlands are also required to take a Future Skills module on top of their normal studies, which covers sustainability, digital skills and key competencies that careers ask for.

The module has been "a huge success", according to Lucy Fosse, marketing and communications manager at the college.

The launch event is to take place at Cooper's Coffee at IFC 5 on the Esplanade on Wednesday 14 June from 5.30pm.

T-shirts will then be available from Coopers Coffee's Castle Quay location and online here.
