Minister signs order allowing Cineworld to reopen

Tuesday 18 May 2021

The Health Minister has signed an order that would allow the cinema to reopen - but the company has yet to announce whether it will reopen its doors before 14 June.

The news comes after Cineworld announced last week it would be reopening its branches across England from 17 May, while the Jersey branch would have to remain closed due to local government restrictions.

The island's only cinema has been closed since 17 March 2020 due to covid.

Last week, the Jersey branch said it wouldn't be "viable" to reopen as they wouldn't have been able to sell drinks and snacks.

"Unfortunately, due to current government restrictions in Jersey, Cineworld will not be able to re-open there at present as it is not viable for us to operate," Cineworld Jersey wrote on Facebook.

"We apologise for the inconvenience but look forward to re-opening the cinema for our valued customers when restrictions are eased, which is currently anticipated to happen from June 14."

The Health Minister has now agreed to amend the Covid-19 (Workplace Restrictions) Order 2020, removing restrictions on serving food and drink.

“Food and drink can now be consumed by audiences and spectators seated in auditoriums and stadiums. This does not include alcohol," he said.

“The reopening of any business that was previously restricted by this Order, remains a private decision by the company.”
