Made in Chelsea star's unapproved shed sparks neighbourly complaint

Friday 23 June 2023

Made In Chelsea star Spencer Matthews could be forced to get rid of a tool shed which has been constructed on his £7m Jersey estate without planning permission.

The TV personality erected the "small agricultural tool shed" after incorrectly believing that "it was legitimate to build under the property's permitted developmental rights".

Therefore Mr Matthews – who bought the Jersey property in December 2021 with wife, Vogue Williams – has now been forced to submit a retrospective planning application for the structure.

Writing on Mr Matthews behalf, planning agent Micheal Stein of MS Planning explained that the shed was "erected in this location because there are no other buildings at Domaine de la Vallete that have the capacity for storing the agricultural tools and equipment need to maintain the 40 vergees of agricultural land".

However, Mr Matthews has now found himself at the centre of a neighbourly dispute after local resident Lyn Plaster submitted a public comment to object to the retrospective planning application.

She outlines her reasons for the objection, one of which is the fact that the shed is located on an agricultural field.

Ms Plaster also complains that the structure is "clearly visible" from public land, including a "number of points within the National Trust and associated lands, most of which is also within the Protected Coastal Area" – which "has the highest levels of protection from development".

She added: "We understand that storage may be required by the applicant, however this should be located within the domestic curtilage or an appropriate place within the agricultural land subject, of course, to appropriate planning permissions.

"We would therefore request that the permission be refused, and the applicant be required to restore the field to its former condition."

However, Mr Stein defends the shed, explaining that it is "tucked close to the northern boundary of the field and built with appropriate materials and colours that fit this countryside context, the proposal will sit comfortably and will not be readily visible from any public vantage points".

The planning agent adds that "the shed also does not include a concrete base so has a light touch on the ground, so is easily demountable without a trace on the environment".

Mr Matthews’ £7m Jersey estate has a main house with five bedrooms, five bathrooms, a TV room, billiards room, conservatory, breakfast room, library, and a health complex with a 70ft by 30ft swimming pool, a gym, sauna and solarium.

The estate also includes a cottage, two detached flats, garaging for six cars, a raised vegetable garden and lawns with automatic sprinklers.

Additional fields and parcels of land neighbouring the home were purchased alongside the property in 2021, totalling an extra £500,000.

Recording the 'Spencer & Vogue' podcast from Jersey in 2021, the Made in Chelsea star described the new property as “another string to the bow”, alongside homes in Howth and London.

However, despite the luxurious home Mr Matthews' wife Vogue Williams revealed last year that she doesn’t want to live in Jersey permanently.

In a podcast episode recorded from Jersey, the model and TV presenter remarked that husband Spencer was trying to "push" the island on her.

She said: “You’re trying to push Jersey on me, you’re trying to make me live here and I don’t.

“I don’t want to live here full time. I’m not living here full time.”

Spencer responded: “I’m not trying to push it on you, you’re pushing it on yourself.”

However, Vogue admitted: “I do love Jersey, I have to say."
