Nick Romeril: My favourite piece of artwork this year...

Friday 01 January 2021

While the doom and gloom of the pandemic slightly hampered Nick Romeril's creativity, it didn't prevent him from bringing a bit of beauty and fun into the world.

He not only painted a series of seascapes but also sculpted a chandelier like no other out of steel.

Renowned for his hyper-real paintings, Nick concluded the year with an exhibition celebrating water in its many states – ocean, ice and snow – which he use to apologise for the “appalling” way we treat it.

In this new body of work, Nick steered away from his beloved blues and incorporated pinks and oranges in a series of paintings depicting local sunsets.

One of those, titled 'Promises', is one of Nick's favourite pieces of artwork he worked on this year. "It’s a sunset, big wave painting and it’s got tremendous power," he said.

But Nick also enjoyed working on something a little bit more unusual: a two-meter painted steel sculpture reminiscent of his 'Cows in discos' project.

"I also did a project for Trinity Manor Farm, where I made some great big cow chandeliers which hang in the cow shed," he explained.

"That was an amazing experience because it was just quite fun and I did it all the way through lockdown.

"It was actually my big project through lockdown. I did this painting over lockdown as well but it was something different in that I am kind of used to doing paintings."
