Three more covid-19 cases confirmed

Monday 16 March 2020

There are now five positive cases of covid-19 confirmed in Jersey, including one parent of a student at De La Salle College.

Health officials announced the increase at midday today (Monday 16 March), with the island’s total of 220 tests returning 215 negative and 5 confirmed positive cases.

In a mail-out to parents seen by Express, the Head of De La Salle College Jason Turner confirmed that someone with a child at the school has tested positive for covid-19, but he reassured parents that the individual and their family, "...have now moved into self-isolation and are following the advice of the Government of Jersey," adding that "they have not come into the college."

Mr Turner emphasises that only one parent in the family has been diagnosed, but as part of public health advice "the rest of the family are self-isolating" along with them.

Currently schools are remaining open, but De La Salle also say that they are planning to cancel parents' evenings to be replaced with reports sent out at the end of term and a number of large-scale school gatherings - including the College theatre production, school photographs and sporting events - are under review.

The Government helpline (01534 445566) for those with concerns they might have the virus is open from 08:00 until 20:00 every day.

The island has also opened a dedicated testing centre.

Jersey people are being asked to self-isolate if they have symptoms, only those who have been directly referred via the corona virus helpline will be swabbed at the island's recently-opened dedicated facility in Five Oaks.

Open from 08:30 until 14:30 daily, the centre will not be accessible to the general public.

Only patients suffering flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, headache and muscle aches), who have been referred via the corona virus helpline will be allowed to attend.

Islanders suffering such symptoms are urged to self-isolate for a minimum of seven days until they are symptom-free - whether they have recently travelled to an affected country or been in contact with anyone with the virus or not.

Over 65s who have been social-distancing also do not need to call unless they have symptoms.
