How I unwind: Kalina Hurst, Eco Campaigner

Saturday 12 August 2023

When she's not busy recycling pots, mugs and clothes, here's what an islander with a passion for the environment gets up to when she wants to relax.

Kalina Hurst, a healer and massage therapist, has a passion for the environment which she channels into various projects, including growing native trees which she gifts to reforesting projects.

In 2021, she co-founded the reuse scheme Potty Eco Pots, which expanded into mugs earlier this year.

She then launched the first Rag Trade event, where islanders are invited to bring along any unwanted clothes and accessories to be taken home by someone else for free, in a bid to tackle the amount of waste created by the fashion industry. The next event is scheduled for Saturday 19 August at West's Centre.

Kalina is also an artist and uses all recycled materials in her artwork, some of which is on display in a joint exhibition at the Harbour Gallery until 10 September.

Although she confessed all the things she does in her life are her “personal ways of relaxing and unwinding” – “I love them all so much they bring me great joy” - Kalina did share a few highlights.

I eat…

...raspberries and wild strawberries which I grow in my roof garden.

I love organic vegetables, so a lovely big fresh salad is something that I love to get stuck into. It really soothes me and I feel so much healthier.

I drink…

I’m an absolute sucker for a cup of red bush tea with pea milk. It sounds horrible, but tastes so yummy. I always put chai spices in – my own blend, of course. It reminds me of my time in India in the mountains – there is such a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere in small villages in the Himalayas. It just takes me back.

I also sometimes drink lemon balm tea from the garden.

I listen to…

...Estas Tonne’s guitar music and I love Dhafer Youcef’s voice. He is a Sufi and has an otherworldly ability to sing very long notes, which has the ability to evoke great emotional releases.

I read…

reading book

I don’t read as much as I should, but I enjoy the books of Khalil Gibran, a Lebanese writer.

I look…

...at the artwork of Susan Sedona Boulet, a Shamanic artist whose work blows my mind.

I also watch the clouds, and the sunshine, and the rain. I love the way light plays over water and through trees.

I go to...

My most favourite thing to do is to spend time in the woods, walking with my husband Andrew.

This is when I feel truly at home.
