A 20-year-old weather record was obliterated over the bank holiday weekend when temperatures surpassed 30 degrees for the first time ever in May.

On Monday 25 May 2026, the official temperature recorded by the Guernsey Met office reached 30.8 degrees celsius.

The Met Office has warned that today is expected to be even hotter, with the official temperature climbing up to the 31c mark.

That would again surpass the previous record set in 2003, when the temperature on 30 May hit 25.9c.

A spokesperson from the Met Office also said that “we are now likely to meet official heatwave criteria during this spell of unprecedented hot weather”.

This includes monitoring the evening temperatures, which are staying above 20c, and are classified as “tropical nights” in meteorological terms.

There is some relief on the way for anyone finding the heat a little too hot, with slightly cooler temperatures on the way.

“Looking further ahead, the position of the high pressure responsible for this heat will shift slightly during the middle of the week, allowing somewhat cooler Atlantic air to move in,” said the Mer Office spokesperson this morning.

“Temperatures will remain above average for the time of year, but with daytime maximums around 22 – 25°c from Thursday onwards, conditions should feel noticeably more comfortable for most people.”
