The following lunchtime Buckingham Palace announced there were concerns for the Queen’s health and at 18:30 her death was announced.
Immediately on the death of the monarch, the heir presumptive accedes to the throne.
The former Prince of Wales was then Proclaimed King Charles III in a Principal ceremony on Saturday in London, before services across the overseas territories including Guernsey, Alderney and Sark on Sunday 11 September.
The Proclamation events saw a pivotal role for the new Lieutenant-Governor Cadets with two taking part in the procession and three assisting Government House staff at the Crown Pier.
The new Cadets are:
- Corporal Cadet Alex Paul, The Boy’s Brigade
- Sergeant Cadet Henry Whittaker, Elizabeth College CCF and Drum Corps
- Chair for Guernsey Youth Forum, Mia Edgworth
- Senior Young Leader, Grace Bennalick, Explorer Scouts
- Young Leader, Maddy Vaudin, Girl Guides

Each year the incumbent Lieutenant- Governor appoints four or five young people from Guernsey’s uniformed youth organisations to assist with the numerous official and public duties the Monarch’s Representative is expected to carry out throughout the year.
As part of their duties supporting His Excellency, the Cadets will also work with The Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney’s Youth Forum. The Forum is a group of young people from across the Bailiwick that represents the views of their peers on issues important to young people in the Island.
The 2022/23 Cadets were appointed from a shortlist of candidates who were all proposed by local youth organisations and schools. Their names were submitted to a selection panel, which, this year, consisted of the Head of Programmes at the Youth Commission, Rebecca Silk and the Secretary and ADC to the Lieutenant-Governor Major Marco Ciotti.
The Cadets are chosen each summer and are appointed in September, to serve for one year. Young people aged between 15 and 18 years old on 1 September are invited to apply. More information on the role of the Cadets and the current Cadets can be found at governmenthouse.gg
