Sark’s popular Sheep Racing event could come to an end after this weekend unless more volunteers agree to help out in the future.

The event raises money for the Professor Saint Fund – a vital organisation which subsidises the cost of prescription medicines for residents.

It takes weeks of preparations to get ready for the weekend, with the marquee going up earlier this month, and people busy baking goods to sell to help boost the coffers.

However, Express understands that more volunteer time is needed to help ensure the future of the Sheep Racing.

Last year’s Sheep Racing weekend raised just over £36,000 for the Professor Saint Fund.

A charity shop on the Avenue, which also supports the Professor Saint Fund, raised £40,000 last year, with other fundraising events also contributing to the fund.

The organisers said the Sheep Racing also supports the island’s economy by boosting boat and bed numbers over the weekend.

A number of sponsors and supporting businesses are involved in putting on the Sheep Racing, which takes place in the Rang family’s field (pictured top) this weekend.

Anyone who wishes to support the Sheep Racing or get involved in organising future events should contact the committee via their Facebook page.
