The annual Sark Sheep Racing festival is back next week with a new face.

Organisers of the Sark Sheep Racing and Carnival used Facebook to try and find a name for their fluffy new logo.

With over 50 suggestions, they had their ‘wool’ cut out for them.

Commenters had fun with names such as ‘Ewe-sain Bolt’, ‘Russel’ (after the Great Russel) and – cruelly – ‘Lamb chop’ being suggested.

Several sheep with testy bears tied to their back jump over a hay bail in a grassy field, as spectators watch on. A Sark Sheep Racing logo with an illustrated sheep sits over the top.

Sheep-lebrity

However, ‘shear’ genius struck when islander Innes Henry suggested naming the logo after a local celebrity – of the woolly variety.

His winning suggestion – which cleaned up with Sark Sheep Race organisers – was ‘Persil’, after the much-loved sheep and star of the BBC series ‘An Island Parish’.

Organisers said: “Our mascot now has a name worthy of a local legend.”

They are are also looking for volunteers to help out at the event on 17 and 18 July.
