Guernsey’s community has come out in force to support the owner of a fishing boat which sank off Sark’s west coast this week – collectively donating thousands of pounds within hours.
‘Wild Wave’ sank on Tuesday and although the owner was rescued with no lasting injuries, and his boat was salvaged, he is unlikely to be back working anytime soon.
A friend of the boat’s owner opened a fundraising page for donations on Thursday, and by Friday morning the fundraising effort had surpassed £12,500.
The JustGiving page had an original target of £10k.
The boat’s owner was rescued from the water by the crew of the Paloma, which is operated by Isle Maritime, earlier this week after the “freak accident” which sunk his vessel.
The fundraiser was set up by Josh Le Cras, who said that although the owner was still fairly new to the world of commercial fishing, Michael was an exemplary addition to Guernsey’s fishing community, and had been using ‘Wild Wave’ to support his young family.
