Guernsey is bracing for a bumper week on the waterfront as the island prepares to welcome over 200 visiting yachts and hundreds of sailors for two prestigious regattas.
The maritime spectacle kicks off follows hot on the heels of last weekend’s Harbour Carnival, offering a massive boost to local marine tourism.
Kieran Higgs, Head of Port Operations, said the regattas were a “highlight of the summer season”.
“Over 200 yachts are scheduled to arrive in Guernsey in the next week alone, creating an incredible sight in our waters and showcasing the island as a prime destination for marine tourism,” he added.
French fleet inbound
First to arrive will be the Tour des Ports de la Manche, one of the biggest events in the French sailing calendar.
Celebrating its 43rd year, the race has drawn its biggest fleet of the decade, featuring over 100 yachts and roughly 500 crew members.
The fleet is expected to sail into St Peter Port from 15:00 on Thursday 9 July, staying overnight before heading to Diélette the next day.
Classic charm from Dartmouth
Just as the French fleet departs, the Classic Channel Regatta will take its place.
More than 80 classic yachts and hundreds of sailing enthusiasts will cross over from Dartmouth, with boats expected to begin arriving on the morning of Saturday 11 July.
The crews will enjoy a welcome reception at Castle Cornet and stay overnight before setting sail for Lézardrieux the following day.
