Action for Children and Guernsey Arts are looking for a local artist to create a mural to uplift a communal outdoor space used by the charity to house young people at risk of becoming homeless.

The outdoor space is at the new AFC housing development which is being used as training flats for young people between 16 and 25.

The artist will be paid for their work to create the mural in collaboration with the young people who share the space and socialise in it.

Requests from the young people using the space is for a “bright and colourful mural focusing on nature and flora” that can provide a place to feel “positive and connected to others”.

Aaron Davies, Children’s Services Manager at AFC, said the work they do supports young people experiencing homelessness or at risk of it in the future.

“This particular project allows us to design a space where young people can create a sense of community, peer support and pride where they live,” he said.

An artist fee of £1000 is available for the successful applicant or group of applicants and designs submitted will be reviewed by the young people using the space.

As well as creating a positive environment, the charities say the “project also presents a great opportunity for a locally based artist or group of artists to create work on a larger scale whilst providing positive engagement with young people”.

Jade Kershaw, Community & Public Realm Officer at Guernsey Arts, said it’s a great opportunity.

“After the success of our last project with Action for Children, Guernsey Arts is thrilled to be working with the team again in order to provide more positive, social environments for young people.

“As well as creating an environment which can help with engagement and expression, these spaces are key to giving young people a space that they feel belongs to them, supporting their development and wellbeing.”

The deadline for submissions is 1 June with the artwork to be installed this summer. More details are available HERE.
