As children go back to school, Guernsey Police are reminding parents to be careful about what they post on social media.
Photos of children in school uniform can reveal personal information, such as the name of their school, the area they live in, or details visible in the background.
For example if the picture is taken outside of your house then your car and license plate might be visible along with name of the house.
Officers in Guernsey shared advice from Sussex Police, including:
- Review privacy settings
On social media accounts, look for sections called privacy, safety, or account where you can make profiles private and limit who sees posts. - Check social media accounts
Reviewing what’s online can help you feel more in control. Start by looking through your own accounts. Check the images and videos you shared and ask yourself: Can my child’s face, body or school uniform be seen? Am I still comfortable with this post being online? Can it be deleted or made private? - Talk about image consent
You may have already discussed image consent with friends, family, and places your child attends like schools and clubs.
Images shared online may be misused or manipulated using AI technology to create illegal child abuse imagery.
Before posting, it is advised to take a moment to check what information can be seen in the photo and think carefully about what you are sharing.
