Despite the hot weather, some animals are still being left without adequate water, outdoors in direct sunshine, and inside vehicles.
The GSPCA said it has received calls about all of these things during this week’s heatwave.
The charity is reminding owners that even with a car parked in the shade or a bowl of water being left out, pets can still be at serious risk during the high temperatures we’re experiencing.
“Over the last few days, I have attended several reports of animals that were potentially at risk due to the hot weather,” said Senior Animal Care and Welfare Assistant Seb Goman.
“Thankfully, after speaking with owners and providing advice, the situations were resolved and the animals’ needs were met.”
Mr Goman added “prevention is always better than intervention…if you see an animal that you believe may be at risk, or if you are unsure about how best to care for your pet during the hot weather, please contact the GSPCA on 257261.”
GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne also urged dog walkers not to exercise their pets during the hottest part of the day. He said they should be walked early in the morning or late evening when temperatures are lower.
“If you cannot comfortably place the back of your hand on the pavement for several seconds, then it is too hot for your dog’s paws.”
Mr Byrne also suggested owners should “lay damp towels on the floor and allow your dog to choose whether to lie or sit on them”.
“Always ensure pets have access to cool areas and fresh water,” he added
Alongside this, the GSPCA is encouraging pet owners and employers to take part in the annual #BringYourDogToWorkDay tomorrow.
The charity said it’s a good way to keep dogs safe and comfortable during the heatwave.
“#BringYourDogToWorkDay is a great opportunity to raise funds for animal welfare while ensuring dogs have company, comfort and a cooler place to spend the day,” said Mr Byrne.
