Lawyers have been warned to watch what they say near courtroom microphones as part of planned audio-visual upgrades in Jersey’s Royal Court.
Advocates have been advised that refurbishment work will take place in the Royal Court and Court Number 2 over the summer, with the aim of improving sound quality for those seated at the back of the courtroom.
The improvements are intended to address an existing issue in the Royal Court, where people at the rear can struggle to hear proceedings taking place at the front.
However, the enhanced system is also expected to make microphones far more sensitive.
In a notice sent to lawyers and seen by Express, advocates were warned that “anything whispered near a microphone will be susceptible to being picked up and broadcast to the wider court, including the public gallery”.
The memo concluded with a reminder for legal professionals to “watch their Ps and Qs”.
