A brand new theatre group is set to perform its inaugural production, ‘The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)’, next week – promising a fast-paced, comedic, and highly energetic summary of all of Shakespeare’s plays in under two hours.
Oh My Gâche Theatre was launched in February by five experienced local performers. Director Sydney Henley-Roussel, and actors Scott Riseborough, Sophie Mahy, Jared Caine, and Joel de Woolfson, are all regulars in the local theatre scene.
The group wants to deliver “two hours of laugh-out-loud moments” and present Shakespeare in a playful, silly, and truly entertaining way, akin to how it might have been performed in his own time.
While the original was for three male actors, Oh My Gâche Theatre has adapted it to feature four roles.
It relies on frenetic slapstick, quick changes, multi-rolling (actors playing many different parts), and a conversational, interactive style with the audience.
Expect creative takes on the plays, like ‘Titus Andronicus’ as a cooking show, ‘Macbeth’ in under four minutes, and the histories as an American Football game.
Ms Henley-Roussel said the shows got humour at the heart, and complimented her actors bringing it to life.
“It’s full of silliness but also impressive how the cast can quickly switch between contemporary language to iambic pentameter. We have tried to cram as much physical humour into every possible moment so should definitely appeal to fans of Monty Python-style comedy.
“It’s been an absolute joy working with some of my closest friends and watching them take my direction and then improvise, adapt and create even more comedy on top of that. These actors are all geniuses, and perhaps mad!”
The show is set for the last week of May, with the opening performance on Tuesday 27 May and nightly productions through to Saturday 31 May.
It’s taking place at Guernsey’s Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts, with all shows starting at 19:00. Tickets are available online through tickets.gg HERE.
