The family of a woman who died in Alderney have issued a statement.

Hannah Benfield (34), nee Cox, was found dead on Monday morning after an overnight search and rescue operation.

A 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder on Monday and remains in police custody.

The Cox family statement said: “We just want to say the biggest thank you to everyone who has supported us over these last few days.

“It’s been an unimaginably painful week and the kindness, messages, hugs, offers of help and simple acts of support from people across the island have meant more than we can say.”

The Cox family statement said that their businesses have reopened following Mrs Benfield’s death.

Both Alderney Farm Shop and Jean’s Stores are “open as normal, with the full support of our amazing team”.

“Our incredible staff are much more than staff…they’re our extended family,” they said.

“We’re looking after each other, getting through this together and doing what we know Hannah would want us to do. Keep going. Keep the doors open. Keep serving our community. Keep trucking on. No fuss. No nonsense.

“So that’s what we’re doing. For her. Always.”

The Cox family said that while they currently don’t have access to the Alderney Farm Shop or Jean’s Stores Facebook pages, family friend Alex Flewitt is updating the community on their behalf.

Any changes to working and opening hours will be shared by Ms Flewitt.

“Thank you, Alderney. We really do live in a very special community and we are so grateful for your support,” said Mike, Clare, Evelyn, and Rocky, Stu, Aleena, Craig, Jess, and all the family.
