A “security incident” which saw around 200 people evacuated from Jersey Airport this morning was deemed as a “non-credible” threat.

Jersey Airport operations director Ashley Maggs said officials had “received information” and “had to investigate [its] credibility”.

“It is deemed as non-credible but obviously we have to take very precaution,” he said.

“We’ve got the expertise on island. We’ve got the people here that are helping support us.”

Ports of Jersey confirmed that the airport was due reopen to passengers at 11:30.

It is understood that the decision to evacuate Jersey Airport was made at around 06:30 in the wake of the threat made, although details have not been shared.

Armed police and other emergency services took passengers and staff out of the airport buildings and later evacuated the entire grounds.

All flights between Jersey and Guernsey were delayed as a result, including the first departures and arrivals of the day between the Channel Islands.

Following an initial investigation the situation was soon considered to be “low-risk”.

The investigation included the screening of luggage, with some bags being taken off aircraft in order to be re-screened.

Mr Maggs added: “We are taking this very seriously – I appreciate there’s frustration, but security is very important and we are absolutely committed to providing a safe environment for our passengers.”

In a statement issued this morning, Ports of Jersey said: “The airport has been evacuated due to a security incident and we are working with States of Jersey Police to manage the incident.”

Passengers are being advised to contact their airlines for updates.
