A fundraiser has been launched to raise £10,000 to save the eyesight of a rescue dog who arrived at the animal shelter last year “in quite a sorry state”.
Walter was taken in by the JSPCA in July 2024 after his original owner fell ill and couldn’t care for the dog anymore.
The animal shelter said: “It was heartbreaking to see Walter suffering.
“He was extremely underweight, malnourished and weak. His skin was extremely sore.
“We also found a number of masses and lumps, as well as problems with his teeth and ears, for which he had to have surgically treated.”
But despite his “terrible state”, the tiny dog “showed much promise”.
The JSPCA added: “Our dedicated team were determined to give him the chance he deserved and cared for him wonderfully; it was a true labour of love.”

Walter’s “guardian angel” and JSPCA volunteer Zeff spent months helping him rehabilitate – and adopted the tiny dog earlier this year.
“Zeff helped him to adjust to a new life, all with buckets of patience and compassion,” the animal shelter added.
Walter’s owners Zeff and Liam are now hoping to raise £10,000 to pay for a “complicated and high-risk” operation that the dog had recently to save his eyesight.
In an appeal for support, the JSPCA said: “His owner Zeff, is an incredibly committed and selfless person and has supported us as a JSPCA volunteer for a number of years, taking on duties without hesitation, stepping in to help at any time and always prepared for a challenge!
“We know we have an amazing community of animal lovers and we’re appealing for any support to help raise funds for Walter.”
