Every weekend, Express presents a selection of exhibitions, performances, workshops and more to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.

Here’s this week’s offering…

French Film Night

Islanders are invited to Alliance Française’s first French film night on Monday 29 June.

Three musical films will be on show to celebrate both the Fête de la Musique and the Fête du Cinéma.

Les Malheurs de Sophie will be shown from 5.30pm. Based on a children’s book, it is recommended for families.

Movie-musical Les Parapluies de Cherbourg , starring Catherine Devenue, will start from around 7.15pm.

Finally, Suprêmes – a “fast-paced” movie about the beginnings of the famous rap group NTM – will be shown from 9.15pm.

There is a 15-minute break between each movie to grab a drink and a snack made by students of Alliance Française.

Tickets cost £15 for the full event or £8 for an individual film. More information can be found here.

Islanders can enjoy a powerful evening of poetry and theatre at Capital House next month.

Haitian writer Gaëlle Bien-Aimé’s semi-autobiographical play Port-au-Prince and its Sweet Night will be performed at 7.30pm on Friday 3 July and Saturday 4 July.

The show, which is about two lovers caught between staying or fleeing from a collapsing city, is performed in French with English subtitles.

The performance will be preceded by Antigone / Agonist, a short new music–text poem created and performed by Jersey-based musicians Michael Freeman, Rui Figueiredo, and James Tyson.

This piece is inspired by Greek tragedy and recurring themes of resistance, the sacred, and unjust power across history.

Created and performed by Jersey-based musicians Michael Freeman (saxophone), Rui Figueiredo (guitar) and James Tyson (voice).

Garden Railway Open Day

A model train garden is set to open to the public to raise money for charity.

The HSBA Garden Railway is holding the event in support of charity Jersey Rescue Dogs.

Volunteers run miniature trains around the site in St Mary, with train sounds played in the garden.

The trains are 4% of the real size and navigate over 138m of track through tunnels, over bridges and past a pond.

Islanders are invited to watch the trains, with kids welcomed to take part in a scavenger hunt.

Teas, coffees, cakes, and snacks will be available at the garden’s Railway Cafe.

Adult tickets cost £5, and child tickets are £3. The day runs on one-hour slots, with a set number of adult tickets available for each time. Child tickets are valid for any slot.
