Two Jersey women will be trekking through Ecuador’s dramatic ‘Avenue of Volcanoes’ next month to raise money for Dementia Jersey – a cause close to their hearts.

The nine-day trek explores the stretch of volcanos and steep canyons on ancient trading paths rising over 3,000 meters, with the aim of raising money to support people living with dementia.

The charity supports individuals whose lives have been affected by the disease, whether it be an individual or their family, and continuously raise awareness of the condition through campaigning and fundraising.

“I’m half-excited and half-nervous”

Two individuals representing Aurum Home Care are among those taking part in the challenge, Mia Richardson and Lynda Febers.

Mia said that Eduador had been a long-time bucket list item of hers, and that the cause is of great significance to her personally.

“Dementia Jersey is a charity close to my heart, my late Gran had dementia and it was really tough to see her go through it,” she told Express.

“This challenge is a tribute to her, whilst also raising money for a fantastic charity who help people like my Gran.”

She added: “I’m half-excited and half-nervous. I’m really looking forward to the experience and taking it on as a team, but nervous about the altitude and any huge insects I may see!”

“We are not sure what to expect!”

Lynda has worked in healthcare from a young age and has supported many clients and families living with a dementia diagnosis.

Sharing her excitement about the challenge, she said: “As this is our first trek, we are not sure what to expect [in terms of] weather conditions and altitude.

“However, we both remain positive and lean on each other for support.”

The pair will begin the trek next month, with the walk due to start on 15 November.
