Islanders are invited to sport their best animal-themed costumes next month as part of a 5km run to raise “vital funds” for Jersey’s oldest and largest animal shelter.

The JSPCA has announced that the inaugural ‘Bark Run’ is set to take place on Sunday 15 March at Les Quennevais Sports Centre.

The charity’s first fundraising event of the year is sponsored by Focused IT and hopes to raise money to support domestic and wild animals in need.

The run is open to all ages and abilities, with participants welcome to walk, jog or run the 5km course.

The route starts and finishes on the Les Quennevais Sports Centre cycle track, with a section along the Railway Walk.

Attendees should arrive at 9.30am in time for the race to start at 10am.

Animal-themed fancy dress costumes are encouraged, but not essential – with prizes on offer for the best dressed.

All runners will receive an official race T-shirt and a finisher’s medal, and the event will conclude with an award presentation and refreshments.

Entry costs £20 for adults and £10 for under-18s.

JSPCA charity engagement lead Sarah Le Page said that the event is about more than just fundraising.

“Events like the Bark Run allow the community to come together to support our mission – to prevent cruelty, promote knowledge and provide care for aged, sick, lost and unwanted animals,” she said.

“Fundraising events like this play a vital role in helping us continue delivering our services and caring for animals in need.”

She added: “We simply couldn’t continue this vital work without the support of our participants and sponsors.”

There are a number of ways islanders can support the event – such as signing up to take part, volunteering on the day, sponsoring a participant, or making a donation.

The registration deadline is 10am on Friday 13 March.
