From late-night chips after a night out to breakfast rolls the morning after, generations of Islanders have passed through the bright yellow doors of this takeaway spot… but now the iconic venue is looking for a new owner.
The Sand Street institution Big J, which has been serving customers since 1997, has officially been put up for sale alongside sister café Roast.
The takeaway – known for its burgers, wraps, milkshakes and breakfast rolls – was founded by Mark Cilliers’ father before being carried forward by the next generation of the family.
In a social-media post announcing the sale, the business said: “This family-run business has stood the test of time for nearly three decades.”
The post added that “Big J offers a rare combination of history, loyalty, and potential” and said the owners were looking for someone new to “take the reins and continue its story”.
A few doors away, Roast has built a loyal following of its own over the years as a breakfast and brunch spot in the Sand Street area.
Roast is also described as a “cosy, welcoming brunch spot people know and love”, which has built up “a loyal base of regulars who come back for coffee, breakfast/ brunch and a good atmosphere”.
