Although authorities are still looking into the cause of the fire, it’s believed to have started due to a fault with an electric bicycle left on charge.

The fire broke out in a property on Mont de Gouray in St. Martin – a road which was closed for several hours whilst the Fire Service worked to extinguish the flames. The Fire Service has also indicated that “the cause of the fire is being investigation, but it’s initially believed that the most probable cause is due to a fault with an electric bicycle being charged.”
Authorities were alerted to the blaze by “multiple emergency calls” which prompted two fire engines along with Ambulance and Police crews to head to the scene.

Whilst firefighters were working to “damp down and make the area safe”, islanders were urged by Police to “stay away.”
The Fire Service have explained that their crew “initially tackled the blaze from outside the building, as it was established that there were several gas cylinders inside and the building itself was also showing signs of being affected structurally by the fire.”
