They’ve been providing the soundtrack to Island life for 150 years… and now one of Jersey’s oldest musical institutions is looking for a new generation to join its ranks.
According to Julie Soudain, “joining The Band of the Island of Jersey is much more than making music”.
“You become part of something very special: a welcoming group of people, a strong sense of community and a proud part of the Island’s history,” the band’s Press and Publicity Officer, said.
“Playing with the Band gives members the opportunity to take part in some of Jersey’s most presitigious and important events, while also enjoying more relaxed performances and fun social activities throughout the year,” she continued.
“We are a friendly group and pride ourselves on making new members feel welcome from the moment they join.”
The Band were in West Centre last weekend with instruments and signs attracting potential recruits.
The band is “particularly keen to hear from school leavers” who are staying in the Island.
However, Ms Soudain said: “Everyone is welcome. The Band is open to anyone aged eight and over, male or female, and from any background.
“We are particularly keen to hear from established musicians who may be looking for a new opportunity to play, as well as school leavers who have learned an instrument through school but may now find themselves with nowhere to continue playing.”
The Band also caters to musicians of any skill level and can teach members, helping them to develop their skills and confidence.
Joining the band is free and the Band provides instruments, tuition and uniform, making it an accessible way for Islanders to play and perform music.
Ms Soudain added: “Whether you are young and just starting out, returning to an instrument after some time away, or an experienced musician looking for friendly ensemble, we would be delighted to have you.
“The most important thing is an interest in music, a willingness to learn and enthusiasm for being part of the Band.
“We would encourage anyone who is interested to come along and discover what being a member is all about.”
