Islanders are being encouraged to enter a new portrait competition aimed at celebrating artists across the Channel Islands ahead of a major exhibition next year.

The ArtHouse Jersey Portrait Award will form part of an exhibition of contemporary portraiture at Capital House in St Helier, running from January to April 2027.

The showcase will feature both local and international artists.

The competition is free to enter and is open to artists aged 16 and over who either live in the Channel Islands or have a strong connection to them.

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday 30 September 2026.

A top prize of £1,500 will be awarded to the winner, with two runners-up each receiving £500.

Both emerging and established creatives are encouraged to submit work.

All forms of portraiture are eligible, including painting, photography and mixed media, provided the pieces are original and completed within the last three years.

Artists are being asked to submit a digital image of their work alongside details including the medium, dimensions and how the piece will be displayed.

Selected works will then go on public exhibition at Capital House from January 2027.

The judging panel will include ArtHouse Jersey’s curator and head of programme, alongside two international guest artists and one local artist.

ArtHouse Jersey associate producer Natasha Dettman said: “Portraiture is such a powerful and personal form of artistic expression, and we’re looking forward to seeing the breadth of creativity, perspectives and stories that artists bring forward.

“We would strongly encourage artists at all stages of their careers to take part. This is a fantastic chance to showcase work as part of a major exhibition and to be part of a vibrant and supportive artistic community.”

Works chosen for the exhibition must be delivered to Capital House on either 8 or 9 January 2027, with collection scheduled for April after the exhibition closes.

Artists can choose to put their work up for sale during the exhibition, with ArtHouse Jersey taking a 15% commission on any sales.
