Detectives are still speaking to witnesses and reviewing CCTV footage to try to trace a middle-aged woman who took hold of an 18-month-old girl’s hand and tried to take her out of the square on Sunday lunchtime.

They have now been told that a woman matching the description of the suspect approaching a two-year-old boy in the square last Sunday at around the same time.

The most recent description of the woman is believed to be about 50 years-old, around 5 foot 3 tall with what the police are calling a “proportionate to heavy build”.  During the second incident on Sunday she was wearing a bright pink shell suit style top and cream or white-coloured trousers.

In a statement last night the police said: “Officers are currently investigating this second reported incident and are following all lines of enquiry, including the viewing of CCTV. Whilst we understand parents may be concerned about these reported incidents, we would encourage simple on-going personal safety measures.”

They say that they are treating the incidents “extremely seriously” but aren’t yet calling of them an attempted abduction because there could be an innocent explanation.
