The newest entrant in St Aubin’s thriving restaurant scene has launched, offering dishes from Slovenia alongside more familiar cuisine.

Chef Grega Zver and his wife Claire have opened Ob Mizi at the Bulwarks site formerly occupied by the Salty Dog.

The couple formerly ran the Old Barn in St Peter, and will be maintaining the popular breakfast/brunch offer from their former venue while adding a new evening menu.

Grega, who hails from Slovenia and moved to Jersey almost six years ago, said the Old Barn had been the first in the British Isles to serve authentic Slovenian cusine. Ob Mizi translates to “at the table” in Grega’s native language.

“We know that quite a lot of people from Jersey and the UK have been to Slovenia to sites like Lake Bled, but they may not know the food, so they can try it with us or choose a more familiar English dish,” he said.

The day-time menu, available until 14:30, includes conventional cooked breakfast choices as well as pancakes, tacos and overnight wheat.

After 17:30, menu options include traditional Slovenian dishes like štruklji dumplings and pearl barley with root vegetables, as well as pork belly, lamb shanks and fish of the day.

Staff who formerly worked at the Old Barn have made the move across the parish boundary from St Peter, working alongside new recruits to swell the total staff numbers at Ob Mizi to 12.
