A number of people took to social media to share their first experiences of eating, drinking and clubbing since the final covid restrictions were lifted on Thursday.

Many were positive but some islanders claimed their weekends involved “rude and appalling behaviour” by door staff, the “inept and appalling behaviour” of a restaurant manager at an “overcrowded, disorganised and shambolic” meal and even dead ants suspended in an alcoholic shot.

But facing an increase in custom against the backdrop of a recruitment crisis, the industry is asking islanders to be understanding and patient.

Simon Soar, Chief Executive of the Jersey Hospitality Association, said: “The industry has faced many challenges over the last 18 months, and as we move to a restriction free position, and also an ability to operate at full capacity, the shortages we are facing in recruitment will become more acute.

“As representatives of the industry and our island, every establishment prides itself on providing world class customer service. That’s what our customers expect and that’s what the vast majority of islanders and visitors experienced in the island’s venues at the weekend.

“We continue to support our members as they resume full service and the challenges this presents and hope our islanders can be supportive too.”

One establishment posted on Facebook: “In a reawakening world, where staff shortages are rife and where Jersey is facing the worst hospitality crisis ever, please remember to BE KIND to all of the workers who are working tirelessly, trying their very best.”
