Police chief Robin Smith has praised the “team effort” shown by authorities and Islanders in response to Storm Goretti after Jersey was battered with wind speeds of up to 95 miles per hour.
In a video update, Mr Smith – who was among those to spend the evening in police HQ’s ‘Situation Room’, coordinating response efforts – also noted that there were “no casualties whatsoever” during the major incident, describing this as a “remarkable achievement”.
I’m delighted to inform you that we’ve rescinded the major incident status. I’m more delighted to inform you that we’ve had no casualties whatsoever – that’s a remarkable achievement

Clean up operations began this morning as teams work to fix damage and clear debris left by the worst storm the island has seen since Ciarán.
“Welcome to the day after the night before,” Mr Smith said.
“Particularly when you look at the view over my shoulder and the sun beating down on the beaches across Jersey, it’s hard to imagine that Storm Goretti went through the island last night,” he continued.
“I’m delighted to inform you that we’ve rescinded the major incident status.
“I’m more delighted to inform you that we’ve had no casualties whatsoever – that’s a remarkable achievement.
“Now we’ve got the tidy up and the clean up across the island, and there are armies of people from government, Jersey Electricity etcetera, looking to restore power and also remove trees from roads.”
He also gave a “shout-out” to the honorary police, who helped to report fallen trees and keep islanders safe.
“But of course all of this is a team effort, all of those agencies that I’ve already mentioned, but also with you,” Mr Smith added.
“So thank you for carefully listening to the advice we gave to allow us to do our job.”
Chief Minister Lyndon Farnham has also expressed “sincere thanks to all those who worked tirelessly through the night”.

He said that “the commitment shown by all”, from emergency services and utility teams to those clearing roads and restoring essential infrastructure, was “greatly appreciated”.
“Recovery efforts are continuing today, and islanders are asked to exercise caution and follow official guidance as we restore services and return to normality as swiftly as possible,” he added.
And the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service said: “Thank you to everyone for following advice to stay home last night and secure all loose belongings before Storm Goretti swept through the island.
“Our job was made much easier thanks to your cooperation.”
